Chapter Eight

Eve

I needed to pee.

It had been a very busy day, and it was far from over. Nikki, the night receptionist, had called in sick last night, and Maria had covered for her, but Maria was now dead on her feet and no help to anyone. We were almost fully booked—there was a blues festival in town this weekend, a family-friendly affair, and I’d spent the morning frantically checking in harassed parents and their overstimulated little kids. We had a small crisis with the laundry when our usual bags were unloaded, and we found tablecloths and aprons rather than sheets and pillowcases. It turned out that the laundrette we used mixed up our order with a local catering company.

Then, one of the major booking websites had mistakenly run a promotion on us. After processing four times as many bookings as usual in the afternoon and being practically tethered to my headset, I finally figured out what happened.

I was now on hold with the booking website, trying to get them to take the promotion down. Of course, I’d been transferred to four different departments, and now I was on hold.

I’d been on hold for ten minutes. And I really, really needed to pee.

I kicked my feet onto the desk and pushed, using it to propel myself to the wall on my office chair, and I thumped on it with my fist. “Maria!” I stage-whispered. “Can you come and help me?”

There was a shuffling in the office next door, and a thump, as she got to her feet. She was probably taking a nap.

It only took her a second to poke her head into my line of vision, on the other side of the plexiglass. “What is it, my little turtle dove?” Her eyes were bleary.

“I’m sorry, boss.” I gave her my best doe-eyes. “I know you’re very, very tired. I’m on hold to the Webook people and I’m not through yet, but I really really reeeeally need to pee.”

She chuckled. “I’m coming in, Eve. I’ll mind the fort.” She unlocked the reception door and swung into the space. I stood and held the door open for her, swiftly placing the headset on her ears at the same time.

“Free Bird,” she sighed, nodding in approval at the hold music. “Good. I won’t go to sleep while I wait.”

“I’ll only be a second,” I told her. “Number ones.” I dashed out the door.

The bathroom was down the hall a little, just outside the lobby. It was weird how your bladder seemed to know when a bathroom was in sight. The pressure was suddenly overwhelming, and I scooted into the bathroom, wiggling my ass as I went. The last few seconds before I got rid of my slacks and panties and slammed my butt down on the seat were intense.

“Ahhhhh.” Instant relief.

I took my time washing my hands, and I smoothed back my hair in the mirror, checking my reflection to make sure I looked as bland as possible. I always parted my hair in the middle and drew it back tightly into a low pony, keeping the thick locks out of the way.
